Winter Olympics Report 16: Requiem for the Trees
The Winter Olympics have seen many environmental protests against their polluting sponsors and ecological and community impact.
And one of the most unique was the performance by celebrated concert cellist Mario Brunello.
In 2024, as hundreds of ancient larch trees were felled for the new Cortina bobsleigh run, Mario Brunello took his cello to the scene, and played a requiem to the dying forests.
Brunello’s beautiful music echoes feelings that many have about these Winter Games: despite claims about their sustainability, they’ve shown very little respect for the natural landscape.
