Winter Olympics Report 1: Polluting Sponsors - The Problem

Welcome to the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics; a festival of international sport in the middle of a global climate crisis that puts athletes, fans and sport itself at risk. Yet the Games are sponsored by a car-maker, an international airline and Italy’s biggest oil company. It’s a paradox.

The second in a series of reports from Matt Rendell breaks down some of the key findings from a new report called “Olympics Torched,” published by Scientists for Global Responsibility and the New Weather Institute.

Matt Rendell will be reporting from the Olympic and climate frontlines in Italy for the New Weather Institute and the Cool Down Network. He’ll be producing regular reports on the Games, the environment and the movement to kick fossil fuel advertising and sponsorship out of sport.
